JURASSIC lookup tables
======================

This directory provides lookup tables for the JURASSIC radiative transfer
model. See the JURASSIC repository and documentation for further information:

Available data sets
-------------------

tria_1cm/
Generic triangular response functions with 1 cm-1 FWHM and channel
    spacing, covering 500 to 2999 cm-1.

tria_10cm/
Generic triangular response functions with 10 cm-1 FWHM and channel
    spacing, covering 500 to 2990 cm-1.

boxcar_1cm/
Generic boxcar responses with 1 cm-1 width and channel spacing,
    covering 650 to 2449 cm-1 (1800 channels).

boxcar_10cm/
Generic boxcar responses with 10 cm-1 width and channel spacing,
    covering 650 to 2450 cm-1 (181 channels).

cris_apo_v4/
Historical apodized CrIS responses in two selected CO2-band regions:
    648.7500 to 685.0000 and 2320.0000 to 2370.0000 cm-1
(140 channels in total, spaced by 0.625 cm-1).

cris_noapo_v4/
Historical unapodized CrIS sinc responses in the same two regions
and at the same 140 channel centers as cris_apo_v4.

cris_apo_v5/
Analytic apodized CrIS-like responses in three regions: 650-1095,
    1210-1750, and 2155-2550 cm-1 (2211 channels at 0.625 cm-1 spacing).
Generated with RFM 5.21 and HITRAN 2020; H2O uses `H2O(sub)`.
The product contains 36 gas files; CH3OH is not part of this set.

cris_noapo_v5/
Analytic unapodized CrIS-like sinc responses at the same channel centers
and with the same 36 gases and spectroscopy as cris_apo_v5. The channel
    responses extend over +/-30 cm-1 with 0.005 cm-1 sampling.

iasi/
Legacy CO2 tables for selected 15 and 4 micrometre IASI regions, generated
with RFM 4.28 and HITRAN 2009.

iasi_v2/
Updated CO2 tables for the same selected IASI regions, generated with
RFM 5.21 and HITRAN 2020. The channel response is approximated by a
    Gaussian with 0.5 cm-1 FWHM.

iasi_v3/
Experimental response-function variant of iasi_v2 using a sinc convolved
with a Gaussian. This response model should be evaluated for the intended
    application before use.

airs/
Historical AIRS response functions for selected CO2 and SO2 bands and
index channels (524 distinct centers in six band directories). The bands
have different gas coverage and spectroscopy settings; these are not a
    complete AIRS instrument LUT set.

al1c_v2/
AIRS level-1c analogue filter set with 2645 irregularly spaced channels
in 17 bands. Channel centers span 649.6192 to 1613.8646 and 2181.5002 to
2665.2479 cm-1. The responses are extracted from AIRS L1C spectral
response function data. Generated with RFM 5.21 and HITRAN 2020 with
`H2O(sub)` and a 0.0005 cm-1 RFM grid, matching the TRIA and CrIS v5
    line table convention.

Distribution format
-------------------

Each data-set directory contains two packed JURASSIC NetCDF variants:

    nc_1e-3/
Tables reduced with RTOL=1e-3 for applications where reduced storage
and I/O are important. Test their suitability for the intended use.

    nc_1e-6/
Tables reduced with RTOL=1e-6. This is the recommended version for
        scientific calculations.

The original response functions and native ASCII lookup tables remain in the
internal archive and are not distributed here. The NetCDF variables store
packed JURASSIC lookup-table blobs by spectral channel; these are not generic
CF-style gridded NetCDF products. The packed data include the exact response
function associated with each channel.

The tria data sets provide one file per gas, named `tria_<gas>.nc`. Their
36-gas products contain:

C2H2, C2H6, CCl4, CH4, CO, CO2, COF2, ClO, ClONO2, F11, F113, F114,
F12, F14, F22, H2CO, H2O, H2O2, HBr, HCN, HCl, HF, HNO3, HNO4, HOCl,
N2, N2O, N2O5, NH3, NO, NO2, O2, O3, OCS, SF6, SO2

Each CrIS v4 data set contains five files, `cris_<gas>.nc`, for CO2,
H2O, O3, N2O, and CH4. The apodized and unapodized sets differ in their
channel responses. Both historical sets were generated with RFM 4.28 and
HITRAN 2009, without `H2O(sub)`. They cover only the two listed spectral
regions, not the complete CrIS spectrum. Check the compatibility of the
H2O tables with separately enabled modern continua.

The CrIS v5 sets each provide 36 files, `cris_<gas>.nc`. A gas file may omit
channels whose ASCII table contains no emissivity data; the 2211 channels
refer to response-function centers, not guaranteed gas absorption coverage.

The IASI data sets currently contain CO2 only and cover selected spectral
regions rather than the complete IASI spectral range.

The AIRS data set contains 25 files per compression level, organized as
`airs/nc_<rtol>/<band>/airs_<gas>.nc`. Available gases and channels depend on
the band. These historical line tables were generated without `H2O(sub)`;
check compatibility with a separately enabled modern H2O continuum.

The al1c_v2 set provides 36 files per compression level, named
`al1c_<gas>.nc`, covering the same 36 gases as the tria products; CH3OH is
not part of this set. The 2645 channels refer to filter positions; a gas
file omits channels whose ASCII table contains no emissivity data.

The boxcar data sets provide one file per gas, named `boxcar_<gas>.nc`.
Their 31-gas products contain:

C2H2, C2H6, CCl4, CH4, CO, CO2, COF2, ClO, ClONO2, F11, F113, F114,
F12, F14, F22, H2O, H2O2, HCN, HNO3, HNO4, HOCl, N2O, N2O5, NH3,
NO, NO2, O3, OCS, SF6, SO2, X65

These are historical tables. Their archived generation scripts specify RFM
4.28 and older line/cross-section data, without RFM continua or `H2O(sub)`.
Check their suitability before combining them with modern continuum settings.
The 10 cm-1 responses are stored with six edge points that reconstruct the
original piecewise-linear boxcar response under JURASSIC interpolation.

Checksums
---------

Each `nc_1e-3` and `nc_1e-6` directory contains its own SHA256SUMS file,
except AIRS, which has one in each band directory. Verify a downloaded table
set from the directory containing its SHA256SUMS with:

    sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS
