Infrared Reference Spectra

Introduction

This data repository provides access to simulated infrared radiance spectra for a range of atmospheric conditions and satellite observation geometries. Radiative transfer calculations were performed with the MIPAS Reference Forward Model (RFM). The spectra cover the range from 650 to 2650 cm-1 (3.77 to 15.4 microns), with a spectral sampling and resolution of 0.05 cm-1. Spectroscopic data were taken from the HITRAN2k database (Rothman et al., 2003). Calculations were performed for five standard atmospheres for the tropics, the mid-latitudes at day- and nighttime, polar summer, and polar winter (Remedios et al., 2007). Radiance contributions of 35 trace gases are taken into account. We considered nadir sounding as well as limb geometries with 5,10, 20, and 40 km tangent height.

Browse images

The browse images provided on this web site show brightness temperature spectra (nadir) or radiance spectra (limb) for the complete range considered in the radiative transfer calculations. The gray curve shows the total radiance taking into account the most relevant trace gases in the atmosphere. The red curve shows the spectrum for an atmosphere consisting of only the selected trace gas.

Data access

The reference spectra are provided as ASCII files. In each file the first column provides the wavenumber [cm-1]. The second column provides brightness temperatures [K] for nadir spectra or radiances [W/(m2 sr cm-1)] for limb spectra.
